Alimentaria focuses on socially-committed initiatives
Alimentaria shows its most socially-conscious side through a firm commitment to collecting the show's surplus food and drinks. To this end, Alimentaria makes several storerooms distributed throughout the show pavilions available to Banc dels Aliments Foundation to enable the organisation to collect food and beverages every day of the show. At the last edition, almost 300 exhibitor companies contributed 20,000 kilos of food, which was distributed to the neediest residents of Barcelona and the province by one hundred volunteers from the Banc dels Aliments Foundation.
Another of the main aims of the cooperation between Alimentaria and Banc dels Aliments is to make use of surplus food for social purposes not just during the trade show, but also by establishing an ongoing relationship throughout the entire year. For this reason, on its website www.bancdelsaliments.org, Banc dels Aliments Foundation offers the opportunity to collaborate with food solidarity in different ways and so contribute to the struggle against hunger and waste.

There can be no doubt that a show the size of Alimentaria, which attracts some 4,000 companies and 140,000 professional visitors, is an enormous producer of containers and packaging, which must be handled in an environmentally responsible way. At the previous edition of the show, Ecovidrio, the not-for-profit organisation responsible for managing recycling of glass container waste for all of Spain, recycled 16,600 kilos of glass containers, equivalent to 49,800 bottles.
